Framing & care guide

How to care for art prints

Handle art prints with clean, dry hands; avoid direct or intense light, moisture, heat, adhesives, and sharp bends; and use supportive framing or storage.

The useful version

Handle the print as little as possible, support it with two hands, and keep it away from direct sun, repeated splashes, persistent damp, and heat sources. Clean the glazing rather than the print, and use only the method specified for that glazing and frame.

Ochre Stone, a PosterBloom art print
PosterBloom print example. Like every work on paper, this print benefits from clean handling, stable room conditions, and display away from direct sunlight and moisture.

Start with placement: it prevents more risk than a cleaning routine

Paper, inks, glazing, frames, and mounts respond differently to light and changing room conditions. A practical care plan begins by avoiding obvious exposure rather than promising a fixed lifespan. Do not hang a print where direct sun falls on it for long periods, where steam or splashes are routine, or immediately above a strong heat source.

No standard glazing makes a print immune to light. PosterBloom framed variants list Perspex glazing; the active specification does not state UV-filtering, so this guide does not claim it. If a bright location cannot be changed, ask a framer about glazing with a documented light-protection specification and understand that protection is not the same as eliminating exposure.

Handle an unframed print slowly and with support

  1. 1. Prepare a clean, dry surface. Remove drinks, tools, dust, and anything that could catch or mark the paper before opening the package.
  2. 2. Wash and dry your hands. Touch the edges when possible and avoid pressing fingers onto the printed surface. Clean hands are more useful than loose gloves that reduce grip.
  3. 3. Use two hands and support the sheet. Do not lift a large print by one corner. Keep it supported while moving it between the package, table, and frame.
  4. 4. Do not improvise with household tape or adhesive. If mounting is required, ask a framer to identify the attachment method and materials rather than applying an irreversible fix.

Inspect the delivery before discarding the packaging

PosterBloom unframed prints ship rolled in an art tube; framed pieces ship boxed and corner-protected. Open the package on a clear surface and inspect the print, glazing, corners, and frame before installation.

If the order arrives damaged, photograph the package and damage and contact PosterBloom within the 48-hour window stated on the PDP. Do not attempt to flatten a crease, polish a scratch, or repair a frame before documenting it; repair can make the original transit damage harder to assess.

Frame and hang from the actual product dimensions

The nominal print size describes the paper format, not necessarily the final outside dimension of a framed object. Frame moulding, a commissioned mat, and gaps between works all add width. Plan the group with the wall-art size calculator and confirm the final outside measurements before placing hardware.

Choose mounting hardware for the wall construction, frame, and actual finished weight. If those are unknown—or the piece hangs over a bed, sofa, desk, or circulation route—use a qualified installer. Check that the frame is stable after installation and after any move or impact.

Clean the enclosure, not the artwork

  • Dust gently. Support the frame and use a clean, soft tool on the frame exterior. Do not brush or wipe the exposed printed surface.
  • Follow the glazing maker's method. PosterBloom's standard framed product uses Perspex glazing. Do not assume a household glass cleaner is suitable for plastic; use only a cleaner and cloth identified for that material.
  • Keep liquid away from seams. Do not spray cleaner directly onto a framed print. Liquid can run toward the frame edge and backing.
  • Stop when unsure. A stain, cockled sheet, condensation, insect activity, or damaged mount is not routine dusting. Photograph the condition and seek a qualified framer or paper conservator before intervening.

Store temporarily without creating a new problem

Keep an unframed print in its clean protective packaging while you arrange framing, in a dry interior location away from direct sun, exterior walls with condensation, and areas where it can be crushed. Do not place heavy objects directly on the rolled or packaged print.

For extended storage, valuable work, or any print already showing damage, ask a paper conservator or qualified framer for a storage plan based on the actual paper, image layer, enclosure, and local conditions. Generic “archival” labels are not enough to determine compatibility.

Use the PDP as the record for your exact object

PosterBloom prints are produced on 200 gsm Enhanced Matte Art paper. Framed variants use solid satin-laminated wood in the finish selected on the PDP. Current framed variants ship without a mat unless the variant label explicitly says otherwise.

Open an active product such as Ochre Stone to check the live sizes, frame labels, and shipping facts. Keep the order confirmation and product information with your records so a future framer or conservator does not have to guess what was bought.
